Fit Guru Physiotherapy Clinic is pleased to add another Chartered Physiotherapist to the team.
Daniel Taylor graduated 14 years ago from Birmingham University.
Dan is a highly experienced Physiotherapist working in a mixture of NHS, Private Practice and elite sports settings.
In 2005 Dan was appointed 1st team Physiotherapist at Birmingham City Football Club. During his time at the club he was fortunate enough to work with elite athletes in both the premier league and championship. And get to know some of the best consultant’s in the country which helped him develop greatly as a medical professional.
Dan eventually left the football club to set up his own private practice called Physio1st, which he later sold in 2013.
Having started a family in Bath Dan is now looking for a new challenge at Fit guru, he is hoping to grow the business significantly and be seen as a market leader for physiotherapy services in Bath.
The Fit Guru Team believe that Dan’s extensive history in professional sport gives him the edge over other physiotherapists in Bath, helping clients to achieve optimal performance when returning to sporting activity in the shortest possible time.
It is obvious that Dan is also superbly equipped to treat and manage conditions that the general public experience, primarily being achieved through his extensive history of working as a locum in the NHS over the past few years.
The Fit Guru Team believe that Dan is going to be a great asset to the Physiotherapy Team.

The Class will focus each week on different Strength routines, one week it could be looking at big Compound moves like Squats, Deadlifts and Bench Press and the next it could be looking at free weight or kettlebell routines.
It aims to make your gym sessions more effective, reduce your risk of injury and improve confidence and motivation

It will run every Monday at 7pm & every Wednesday at 8pm, instructed by our excellent ‘in-house’ Personal Trainer Felix Adams.

Description of Complementary Workshops:
Ladies Only Group Training Session:
This session gives you a taster into a package that we offer at Fit Guru Gym, ran by our excellent ‘in-house’ Personal Trainer Charlotte Latham.
The package includes Female only small group personal training, which runs 3 times per week over a 5 week period, with weekly body assessments. The package provides nutrition support with food diaries and shopping lists, allowing you to follow one of 2 diet options, either weight-loss or toning.
The package helps you to lose unwanted fat/weight/inches, and it helps to boost confidence, by providing psychological support and ultimately helping you to sustain a new healthy lifestyle.
It’s a perfect opportunity to stay motivated and have fun with like-minded individuals, at the end of the 5 week package there is a little black dress evening out to celebrate your new found body and confidence!
This package is offered at ONLY £150 for 5 weeks or £300 for 10 weeks

M.E.L.T Fit (Mobility / Stretch Workshop)
This Complementary Workshop is led by our Chartered Physiotherapist Laura Jeffrey.
The aim of this session is to highlight the importance of mobilising, stretching and recovery time, especially when you Train and lift heavy things regularly.
The first 15 minutes of the workshop will involve partnered assisted stretching. Stretching on your own is effective, but assisted stretches provide added benefits, allowing for deeper stretches, longer holds and positions that would be difficult to reach on your own.
The next 15 minutes will involve teaching self-mobilisation techniques to apply direct release to tight structures, these are safe self-treatment techniques which prepare you for strenuous activity.
Then the Physio will demonstrate the effectiveness of the ‘Voodoo band’ to help improve range of movement, restore joint mechanics, or unglue matted down or previously injured tissue. The technique involves Compression tack and flossing with the voodoo band, and it works on many levels; including re-perfusing tissues that have become stiff or gone cold after injury, and by compressing swelling out of tissues and joints. Because the Voodoo band can be used while actually performing the movement the athlete is trying to change, its effect on sliding surface and restoration and tissue mobilization is brilliant.
And the final 15 minutes will involve a demonstration of kinesiology taping and how it aids muscular and joint stability without restricting the body’s range of motion, and how Acupuncture can also help if the pain is the result of a tight muscle or some tissue between muscles sticking together (ie. a fascial adhesion). In this case, a needle directly into the trigger point or place of adhesion can resolve the problem.

‘Flex Fit’ Hypertrophy Training:
Nat will provide a Hypertrophy Class called ‘Flex Fit’, isolating specific muscle groups and super-setting compound moves.
Hypertrophy-Specific Training (HST) is a method of strength training intended to induce the fastest muscle growth, or hypertrophy, possible, without losing efficacy over an extended period of time.
Think dumbbell routines to smash your shoulders, curls to pump your guns, squats to hammer your quads, & deadlifts to maximise your Glutes… ‘Flex Fit’ is sure to be a killer!

Strongman Training:
Strongman training is about true functional strength, it’s about lifting heavy, awkward objects (like those you encounter in life) and getting them from A to B. Whether that it is from the ground to overhead, or from one end of the room to the other. Strongman is about getting you strong to a degree that you never thought possible. All primal movements are covered pushing, pulling, lunging, squatting, bending, twisting & walking with load.
Almost any strongman exercise is going to make your pulse hammer! Because so much muscle is working at one time, your body’s demand for oxygen is extreme. You’ll get a cardio session in while training your muscles.
Think weighted carries, atlas stone lifts, sled drags, tyre flips and pushing pick-up trucks! … Think STRONG!

Another great addition to our gym is the new Glute and Hamstring Developer (GHD).

This is a great bit of kit that focuses on working your Posterior Chain, often an area neglected in many.
Your posterior Chain is your back, butt and hamstring muscles and they contribute to jumping, pushing, pulling, running and even something as simple as sitting down and standing up. Unfortunately, ensuring that you have a strong posterior chain is tricky for a number of reasons. First, most people sit on their arses all day, leading to quad dominance. The glutes then lose their primary role of hip stabilization and extension. Second, many people have placed too much focus on the muscles of the anterior chain (which include the abs and quads) either intentionally or unintentionally through incorrect programming.
The posterior and anterior chains are intimately linked, so there needs to be balance between the two. If too much attention is placed on strengthening the quads, then the glutes and hamstrings will not get any support. Sedentary lifestyles, sitting at the desk and lack of proper exercise lead to poor muscular activation patterns within the posterior chain. This basically means that the main muscles that should be performing most of the work take a break and the stabilizing muscles have to take over. When this happens, there is marked anterior tilt of the pelvis and an accentuated curve at the lumbar spine. This is a recipe for acute and chronic lower back pain syndromes.

Every muscle group needs to be flexible and strong enough to do its job, otherwise there will be an over-reliance on others to take the load. This can contribute to chronic tightness, fatigue, stiffness and spasm episodes—not to mention the risk of injury when you are moving weight. This highlights the importance of focusing on both mobility and stability in your Training.

In a nutshell training the posterior chain is crucial to be able to move well, perform athletic movements, and protect yourself from injury. Obviously, the chain should not be neglected, and fortunately many of the exercises we do in our Classes (such as kettlebell swings and deadlifts) target the muscles in the chain to ensure that they are strong. Fit Guru Gym & Physio Clinic Celebrates its 5th Year Anniversary

Fit Guru’s Ethos is ‘EVERY JOURNEY MUST BEGIN WITH A SINGLE STEP’.
When our journey started 5 years ago, we started out with much less equipment and just Joe & I for staff!

Over the years we have built it up & flourished into a fully equipped gym.
We may still be SMALL in comparison to other large commercial gyms BUT we are STRONG!
And hopefully our small independent nature reflects in the friendly, fun & welcoming service that we provide.
Over our relatively short time as gym & Physiotherapy Clinic owners we have learnt that…
PROGRESS IS IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT CHANGE…
Therefore we have always vowed that we keep up to date when it comes to New Training Kit, New Styles of Training, New Techniques, and New evidence based practice.
Joe & I have also acknowledged that building our Team is extremely important, Introducing Charlotte to the Team has really helped increase our female members. Charlotte provides excellent ladies small group training sessions on both Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday Mornings.
Introducing Sophie to the Physiotherapy Team has allowed us to increase our client load, now running 2 Clinics alongside one another, and also freeing up time to carry out 1-2-1 Pilates Sessions and small group sessions in our new Rehabilitation Studio.
We are also really excited to be welcoming Nat to our Fit Guru Team. Nat will provide a Hypertrophy Class called ‘Flex Fit’ on Thursday’s at 7pm, isolating specific muscle groups and super-setting compound moves .. it’s sure to be a killer!
The quote ‘THE CAPACITY TO LEARN IS A GIFT, THE ABILITY TO LEARN IS A SKILL, THE WILLINGNESS TO LEARN IS A CHOICE’ and it has always rung true with both Joe & I, we try to live by this motto and hope that the Team we continue to build at Fit Guru follow this also.
With this in mind it has been great that this year Joe has been on a once a month training course, building on his existing knowledge, expanding his Nutrition knowledge and learning new training styles, which he has already successfully implemented into his Personal Training sessions.
Charlotte has successfully completed her University Degree in Sport & Exercise Science and is now working full time at the gym and proving to be an invaluable asset to the team. Charlotte is also due to qualify in Pre and Post Natal Exercise, and start ‘baby & Bumps’ specialist sessions at Fit Guru later in the year.
And I am due to attend a Myofascial Cupping Course, which is proving to become a popular treatment technique, as more people are becoming aware and educated about how constant foam rolling can create inflammation and soft tissue breakdown, therefore myofascial cupping is an effective but gentler method to eradicate muscular tension.
Fit Guru’s future plans are to enrol a qualified exercise referral practitioner, to help special populations that have been referred to them by their GP. This same practitioner will also be qualified to provide Nutrition and Lifestyle meetings for people that are particularly requiring education, advice, and support.
The Fit Guru Physiotherapy Team are hoping to implement more mobility and stretching regimes either on a 1-2-1 basis or in small groups. And further expand on their Pilates services that they currently provide.
Like I said at the start of this article and back when it all began 5 years ago! EVERY JOURNEY MUST BEGIN WITH A SINGLE STEP…
We have both thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far, we really appreciate the consistent support we have received from our friendly members and our family and friends, and we look forward to developing and building Fit Guru further.
